Since I didn’t write a special Mother’s Day article, I thought I might write a Parent’s Day article for Father’s Day. That way both sides are even.
Here’s a test for you parents out there. Without any prompting, ask your child these questions and write down EXACTLY what they say. It is a great way to find out what they really think. This test could be used for both moms and dads. In this case, I’m using what my four year old granddaughter said to her mother and my daughter-in-law. My granddaughters’ answers are in capitals.
What is something mom always says to you? TO DO THE RIGHT THING. What makes mom happy? GETTING HER PRETTY STUFF. What makes mom sad? DOING THE WRONG THING. How does your mom make you laugh? BEING SILLY. What was your mom like as a child? PLAYING WITH HER MOMMY AND DADDY AND BROTHER. 6) How old is your mom? FIVE. 7) How tall is your mom? BIG.
What is your mom’s favorite thing to do? PLAY WITH ME AND MY BROTHER. What does your mom do when you’re not around? DO WORK. If your mom becomes famous, what will it be for? FOR BEING PRETTY. What is your mom really good at? MAKING GOOD FOOD. What is your mom not very good at? BEING A BAD SPORT, MOMMY YOU ARE A GOOD SPORT!
What does your mom do for a job? FEEDS THE DOGS. What is your mom’s favorite food? MACARONI. What makes you proud of your mom? HER LOVING ME AND MY BROTHER. If your mom were a character, who would she be? PRINCESS ANNA IN ‘FROZEN.’ What do you and your mom do together? PLAY JOKES. How are you and your mom the same? SAME EYES.
How are you and your mom different? OUR EARS ARE DIFFERENT, MINE ARE SMALL AND HERS ARE BIG. How do you know your mom loves you? BECAUSE I JUST KNOW! What does your mom like most about your dad? BEING MARRIED AND KISSES. Where is your mom’s favorite place to go? PIZZA PIPERT (PETER PIPER PIZZA). How old was your Mom when you were born? SEVEN.
Discern the important things in my granddaughter’s life. Everything revolves around her family. She relates to Mom, Dad and Brother and then most everything else. That is her world. This period in her life is designed by God to build family values in her that will influence her decision making, her individual sense of value, and her value of others.
People are married for each other. People are parents for their children. God created the family to start with parents; parents that love God, parents that love one another and parents that love their children. God wants parents to understand the way that He feels about His children. Family is important.
Parents remember your children. You are their world. Be more than a progenitor or a baby sitter. Peter Di Vries says, “The value of marriage is not that adults produce children, but that children produce adults.”
For those of you who might be single parents, I know you may feel depleted, betrayed, broke, hopeless, or whatever. It’s hard but invest time now in your children by investing time in God. God can parent you to parent your children. Married couples that’s for you too!
